Covid-19…Diabetes and Blood Pressure

What is the Relationship?

It continues to rear its many faces…

And even though relatively new, it’s mercilessly inflicting unprecedented and incalculable socioeconomic devastation the world over.

The first case was officially reported in China towards the end of 2019 or thereabout…

It henceforth took a roller coaster slide, spreading rapidly like a wind-blown bush fire…

Taking the globe, and in particular, the medical fraternity by the storm–literally flatfooted!

Nobody seemed to understand this invisible monster and the trajectory it would take.

New presentations and manifestations of the virus have continued to emerge as it evolves…

And the WHO has continued to issue advisories and guidelines accordingly.

As of today, July 15th, 2020, emerging evidence suggests it’s causing multiple organ failure–the kidneys…the heart and blood clotting problem.

For sure, no one can predict where we’re headed with absolute certainty…

The dynamics are simply slippery…

As of early April 2020, preliminary data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that along with advanced age, various underlying health conditions–mostly diabetes, chronic lung disease and heart disease–put patients at a higher risk of developing fatal corona viral complications.

As if this wasn’t enough, a report from Italy found among 481 patients who died of the virus–about one-third had diabetes. This represents a risk of death 5 times higher than would ordinarily be expected based on overall diabetes prevalence in Italy.

While the pandemic is still evolving, with a lot remaining unknown, pointers are that its toll on people with diabetes and high BP is more severe.

People with Type 2 diabetes, whose underlying cause is insulin resistance, tend to suffer chronic, low-grade inflammation, leaving their immune system compromised by the sustained inflammation.
