Coffee protects your liver against alcohol-induced cirrhosis

Coffee Shields Your Liver From Alcohol

Among hot beverages, coffee stands out in remarkable ways…

One clinically established effect of excessive alcohol consumption is the potential for liver cirrhosis–a condition characterized by liver scarring, which can ultimately lead to liver failure.

A recent study has found that 2 cups of coffee per day may reduce one’s risk of alcohol-induced liver cirrhosis by a whopping 43%.

The authors of the new study, published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, wrote:

Coffee comprises over a thousand compounds, many of which are biologically active and may affect human health. These include caffeine, chlorogenic acid, melanoids, and the pentacyclic diterpenes, kahweol, and cafestol…The biological effects of coffee include stimulation of the central nervous system, primarily by caffeine, the attenuation of oxidative stress and inflammation, and anti-carcinogenesis…In the context of liver disease, coffee appears to confer a number of protective effects”.

And while previous research had made associations between coffee and liver protection, the new study went a step further and conducted more large-scale analyses…

The researchers gathered data from 9 previous studies on the subject of coffee and cirrhosis risk, and analyzed the results.

The studies had involved over 430,000 participants, and the analyses of study results showed that one cup of coffee per day correlated with a 22% decrease in the risk of developing alcohol-related cirrhosis.

Two cups were associated with a 43% decrease in risk, and 3 cups added up to a 57% decrease in risk.

Four cups of coffee per day were found to correlate with a staggering 65% decrease in the risk of developing this condition.

The study authors concluded: “This meta-analysis suggests that increasing coffee consumption may substantially reduce the risk of liver cirrhosis”.

This study, however, had some limitations. To begin with, only alcohol-related cirrhosis was analyzed. Instances of liver cirrhosis triggered by other factors such as obesity were not taken into account.

Further research is imperative to investigate whether coffee offers the same protective benefits in non-alcohol-related cases.

Again, the coffee type analyzed was not studied in-depth. So it’s unclear from this study whether one type of coffee, or brewing method may be more beneficial than other types.

And as to why coffee may offer such incredible protection to the liver, the researchers did not quite put a finger on it.

However, they do hypothesize that the antioxidants wealth and density found in coffee, may be a factor due to their massive anti-inflammatory properties.

These research findings do not in any way encourage over-imbibing. But they do give you yet another compelling reason to relish your brew…

And like Turkey Tail, it’s packed full of anti-aging antioxidants, coming in right above baobab, with an ORAC value of 146,700. It also loads polysaccharides.

These antioxidants give it strong immune-boosting power, an ability to fight inflammation in the body, and antiviral properties.

Chaga is also currently being studied for its potential to fight cancer and shrink tumors.

Studies have also revealed that chaga may be able to lower blood sugar levels and improve physical endurance.

Now, it’s Camu Camu turn to showcase what it offers…

It’s a fruit native to the Amazon rainforest that looks similar to a cherry, but with pale flesh.

Camu camu boasts the second highest vitamin C content in the world after the kakadu plum. This makes it great for immune health and protection against free radicals.

More to that, it loads potent antioxidants, mainly flavonoids that work synergistically with vitamin C to protect your health.

Studies show that it can significantly lower markers of oxidative stress and inflammation–a feat vitamin C cannot achieve on its own.

The flavonoids and carotenoids in camu camu have been shown to protect skin from free radical damage, which can in turn slow or improve signs of aging on your skin.

It has a sour taste, but can easily be added to smoothies, yogurt, and so on. Avoid heating camu camu, lest you destroy its antioxidant content.

Micro-greens are a part of the overlooked superstars…

And they are basically the miniature leaves and shoots of familiar herbs and vegetables, containing many of the same nutrients as the full-grown plant, but in higher concentrations.

This means you can get more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants from eating micro-greens than from consuming the same amount of their full-size counterparts.

KImchi is yet another superfood that tends to be pushed to the back burner, but its health benefits as a probiotic-rich, fermented food are well documented.

Kimchi is unquestionably a superfood that’s typically made with napa (Chinese) cabbage and other vegetables like radishes.

Because kimchi is made mainly of cruciferous vegetables, it boasts the same properties as the unfermented versions, which includes an abundance of antioxidants and potential cancer-fighting compounds like sulforaphane and glucosinolates

And although each version of kimchi differs from the next, all contain a remarkable array of nutrients.

A typical serving is rich in fiber, vitamin K, vitamin C, iron, vitamin B6, folate, riboflavin, and niacin–each of which benefits the body.

Additionally, kimchi contains gut-boosting probiotics that help maintain good digestion.

Even better, a specific strain of the beneficial bacteria in kimchi–Lactobacillus plantarum–has shown immune-enhancing effects in studies.

This list cannot be complete without the Breadfruit… an interestingly named fruit that originated in the South Pacific, and is commonly consumed in Hawaii and other tropical areas.

Though considered a fruit, breadfruit is very starchy and has an almost potato-like texture…

And it’s likely one of the ancient superfoods early Hawaiians depended on, along with taro and coconuts.

Breadfruit boasts an illustrious nutritional profile. One cup of raw breadfruit contains fiber (10.8 grams), protein (2.4 grams), vitamin C (106% DV), potassium (31% DV), thiamine (16% DV), magnesium (14% DV), vitamin B6 (11% DV), and lower amounts of niacin, copper, folate, manganese, phosphorus, iron, and calcium.

It’s also full of antioxidants that offer protection against age-related diseases, as well as protect your body from free radical damage.

Extracts from the fruit have even proven to have antimicrobial properties against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Research shows that breadfruit is also great for heart health and can boost your immunity as well.

Breadfruit is best consumed fresh. Look for it at your local specialty grocery store if you live outside the tropics. It’s also possible to have it shipped frozen or cooked (look for it frozen under its Hawaiian name “Ulu“).

We are not yet done with superfoods–not by a long shot…

Because there are three little-known superfoods that “feed” your skin, and it’s important that you know them.

One of them is Maple leaf Extract

And it’s renowned for protecting the anti-sag skin protein known as elastin.

Elastin is the counterpart to collagen, and both proteins work in sync to keep your skin looking firm, wrinkle-free, and radiant.

It does just what the name sounds like: keeping your skin “elastic” so that it can bounce back to its original shape and position after being stretched or damaged.

Without enough elastin, your skin will eventually start to sag, look old and withered, and wrinkle more easily…

And while the skin care industry has embraced collagen, elastin has remained in the shadows, though it’s an equally important protein.

The good news is that this is changing with the discovery of maple leaf extract for skincare.

A 2018 research documented how compounds in red maple leaf extract–called glucitolcore, containing gallotannins (GCGs)–were able to inhibit the activity of elastate, the enzyme that breaks elastin down within your body.

By inhibiting this enzyme, maple leaf extract could preserve and even boost elastin, leading to firmer, tighter skin.

On a lighter note, maple has been dubbed a potential “plant-based Botox“.

There is also evidence that GCGs could potentially lower inflammation in skin and lighten dark spots, further making your skin look brighter, younger, and healthier.

The GCGs in red maple leaf extract are skin permeable, and have antioxidant activity, so your skin will “drink” them right up.

In contrast, collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed. So applying collage to your skin is completely ineffective for boosting collagen levels.

Look for high quality, organic skincare products with red maple leaf extract, which contains anti-aging properties.

And now enter…

Babchi oil with Bakuchiol

Babchi is a plant and medicinal herb that has long been used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, and is known botanically as Psoralea corylifolia.

Bakuchiol on the other hand, is a specific and extremely powerful compound that’s found within the babchi plant.

As an extract, bakuchiol has so many skin-boosting properties that it has been given the nickname “natural retinol alternative”.

And if you know anything about retinol, you may be aware that it’s considered a “gold standard” in the anti-aging skincare world.

It has a long list of benefits like combating wrinkles, plumping skin, evening out skin tone, and making skin look more youthful, overall.

Unfortunately, conventional retinol has downsides–it can cause redness and irritation on the skin, and even worse, it may increase your risk of skin cancer.

But bakuchiol comes in handy to give you some solace…

In a 2018 study, bakuchiol was found to be just as effective as retinol, but without any of the negative side effects.

Specifically, bakuchiol has shown the ability to boost collagen, decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin elasticity and firmness, and brighten skin tone.

More to that, it’s soothing and hydrating, rather than causing skin irritation, and may even protect your skin from UV damage by acting as a powerful antioxidant.

You can use bakuchiol for your skin as an isolated and purified extract, or you can use babchi oil that naturally contains bakuchiol.

Bakuchiol is increasingly available as an ingredient in skincare products, so scrutinize the labels…and as with all foods herein, opt for organic where possible.

The third superfood for your skin is Smartweed with Resveratrol

Which is a powerful anti-aging antioxidant extracted from red grapes, with benefits like protecting brain health and potentially fighting cancer.

Resveratrol is also incredibly beneficial for anti-aging skincare.

You see, keeping your skin healthy and youthful as you age is a big challenge because of free radical damage.

Your skin is the first line of defense your body has against toxins, which means that free radicals quickly accumulate on the skin, thereby accelerating signs of aging.

Damage from excessive UV radiation (photo-damage) is one of the biggest free radical generators, and can cause your skin to look old prematurely.

This is where the antioxidant resveratrol kicks in. It works at the cellular level to protect and fight against signs of photo-damage–wrinkles, under-eye bags, sagging skin, dull skin tone, dark spots, etc.

And as it turns out, resveratrol isn’t just found in grapes. It’s also found in several plants of the smartweed or knotweed family (polygonaceae).

Plants like the Japanese knotweed  and smartweed are particularly high in resveratrol that can be extracted for skincare.

They are an awesomely sustainable source of resveratrol, after all, they are called “weeds“, meaning they can be easily grown without pesticides, unlike grapes.

Look for organic products that contain smart-weed extract and apply daily. You will mostly find it in anti-aging products, like creams.

Thus far…

There is no denying that you’re ahead of the curve, just by knowing about the emerging and certified superfoods for both your body and skin.

That’s good enough and congratulations!

But don’t set out with the entire list–it will be nearly impossible to start consuming all of these superfoods at once.

Instead,  focus on a handful and start indulging them regularly (preferably daily) until you notice positive results.

Remember, one of the biggest reasons people think superfoods don’t “work” is because they try them for a few days, don’t notice any change, and quickly quit.

Don’t do that!

You need to sustain use for a reasonable period of time to reap their optimal benefits.

Again, always buy organic, including skincare products whenever possible. Even superfoods will lose their “power” and become toxic if they are loaded with pesticides and other chemicals.

Even better, buying organic means you’re avoiding GMOs.

Not the least, should you choose to supplement, look for ones that are third-party tested for contaminants and certified as organic.

Plants can accumulate heavy metals and other toxins from the soil they grow in, or they can be contaminated during the manufacturing process.

As much as humanly possible, you want your food, supplements, and skincare products to be as close as possible to their natural state and free of unwanted extras.

And there you are…

The heavy lifting has been done for you!

Cucumber…A Nutritional Powerhouse

Chances are slim that this veggie would catch your eye in the grocery stores…

Perhaps because of its not-so-attractive shape, or little is known about it–they don’t get the publicity they deserve!

Maybe you cannot even tell whether it’s a veggie or a fruit!

But you know what…

The cucumber boasts an impressive nutritional profile. In fact, it can even replace your daily multivitamin.

Cucumber or Cucumis sativus is in the same family as melon and squash…

Commercially, cucumbers are divided into two groupsslicing and pickling. Slicing cucumbers generally have thick skin and are larger than the thin skinned pickling cucumbers.

And for a long time, this fantastic veggie had escaped the eyes of researchers, to the extent of being upstaged by the cruciferous crew (broccoli, cabbage, etc) until it was found to contain 3 beneficial lignans (lariciresinol, pinoresinol, and secoisolariciresinol)…

Which have been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, as well as several different types of cancer, including ovarian, prostrate, breast, and uterine.

And you’d be pleased to know that cucumber is a super-food containing almost all your daily vitamins requirements, including B vitamins, vitamin C, fiber, vitamin K1, minerals like copper, potassium, and manganese. You only need to eat one cucumber daily in place of a multivitamin.

And you can count on them for an energy kick. Rather than crave that third cup of coffee, chomp on a cucumber instead. The carbs and B vitamins in cucumber deliver an energy boost that can keep you going for hours.

Sometimes you can over-imbibe, but your morning doesn’t have to be a nightmare when you have cucumber around!

Eat a cucumber right before bed and your hangover agony will ease off.
