Cardamom…and its unparalleled health benefits

It’s a little-known spice…

Maybe you’ve not even heard about it!

But…just a moment…

Have you sipped on a warm Chai or sapped on a delicious Indian dinner?

The exotic, tantalizing spice that makes you drool could be cardamom

Which has a sweet, pungent flavor with a touch of light, floral, lemony sweetness. It’s often used in Indian seasonings like garam masala and curries…

And it’s also delicious in Chai, or Arabic coffee, breads, pastries, and other recipes.

Cardamom is one of the age-old spices that has been used for years to treat health disorders such as diarrhea, indigestion, depression, and even as an aphrodisiac (sexual desire arousal).

Like many spices, cardamom is full of powerful phytonutrients and antioxidants.

It contains manganese that helps the body create connective tissues, bones, and sex hormones

It’s also critical for nerve and brain function, besides helping the body metabolize carbohydrates and fats.

Cardamom contains other phytochemicals, including limonene, pinene, myrcene, alpha phellandrene, alpha terpineol acetate, cineol, heptane, phytol and more. These compounds contribute to the medicinal properties of cardamom.

One study published in the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology found cardamom to be active against H.pylori infections, which are responsible for ulcers and some forms of gastric cancer.

Another study found that cardamom alone could completely prevent or reduce the size of gastric ulcers by at least 50%.

Not only that…

Cardamom has been found to work against cavities and bad breath. In fact, in some countries, cardamom is chewed for purposes of freshening breath.

A study from Kurukshetra University in India looked at the anti-microbial effects it has on oral bacterial, and found that extracts of cardamom can inhibit or kill Streptococcus mutans and Candida albicans, as well as bad breath-causing bacteria.

Cardamom is also effective as a cavity preventative, helping kill the bacteria that cause tooth decay.

In one study, cardamom extract was found to be effective in fighting 5 different types of bacteria that cause cavities.

Even better…

Cardamom helps in lowering high blood pressure. It has a diuretic effect on the body, which increases urination, thereby easing high blood pressure.

In one study, 3 grams of cardamom powder were given to 20 adults with high blood pressure, and after 12 weeks, their blood pressure levels decreased to the normal range.

Better still, cardamom’s high antioxidant content complements its effect on lowering blood pressure.

And the list of health benefits doesn’t end here…

Because its high manganese content helps diabetics stabilize blood sugar levels.

Research shows that people with diabetes tend to have low levels of manganese

And manganese deficiency can lead to glucose intolerance, which is what happens in diabetes…

Not to mention that manganese is concentrated in the pancreas, which produces insulin–the hormone that evacuates glucose from the bloodstream, thereby helping to keep blood sugar levels low.

And still there’s more…

Cardamom contains antioxidants and other compounds that increase the activity of cancer-fighting enzymes. In addition, cardamom may stimulate your body’s cancer-killing cells, helping to keep tumors at bay.

What’s more…

Cardamom has been shown to help slow down the growth of colon cancer, and the eugenol it contains can help reduce the risk of tobacco-induced cancers in the lungs.

Cardamom is commonly available in grocery stores, and it comes in 3 different types: green, black, and Madagascar. The green type is the most common and easiest to find.

It comes in pods or readily crushed powder, but it loads its strongest flavor in pods.

The pods contain brown aromatic seeds that can be ground to unleash the potent flavor.

Keep in mind that ground cardamom seeds lose their flavor and aroma quickly. So it’s best to grind them just before cooking.

Add cardamom to your favorite Chai tea, or golden milk for some extra flavor boost.

Cardamom belongs to the same botanical family as turmeric and ginger…

And both cardamom and turmeric pair well in many spice blends and dishes, and they load multiple health benefits.
