What You May Not Know About Turmeric…

Common in Indian cuisine, turmeric is what gives Indian curries their unique flavor and color. It’s also used in mustard and coloring butter and cheese.

The curcumin content in turmeric is not high–only around 3% by weight.

Other studies show that even high dosages of curcumin won’t increase absorption.

When metabolized in the liver, the activity of curcumin tends to diminish. Additionally, the act of excretion of curcumin from the body also plays a major role in its activity.

An animal study revealed that 75% of curcumin was excreted and only trace amounts were found in the urine.

So, what can you do to improve the rate of curcumin absorption and reap the enormous health benefits?

The secret lies in black pepper.

You see, black pepper comprises 5% of the active compound piperine, which is responsible for the pungent flavor of pepper.

But that’s not all…

Piperine enhances the absorption rate of curcumin by a whopping 2,000%!

And your liver is a major variable in the jigsaw puzzle…

Because it gets rid of foreign substances by making them water-soluble so they can be more easily excreted. However, black pepper molecules inhibit that process…

Meaning if you combine a small amount of black pepper–a quarter of a teaspoon–with turmeric, the levels of curcumin in the bloodstream would skyrocket.

You may even consider swallowing a few whole peppercorns when taking a curcumin supplement to enhance absorption…
