It’s been in obscurity for ages…despite loading countless health wonders…

Perhaps because the medical world doesn’t say much about it!

Selenium is considered a trace mineral i.e. one that doesn’t require large doses to make a difference, yet very essential for optimal health.

It pairs up with vitamin E to become an even more powerful antioxidant in the body. In fact, it helps create the master antioxidant called glutathione.

It’s also vital for the proper functioning of the thyroid glands

Selenium works with iodine to protect and maintain proper functioning of the thyroid hormone, which regulates metabolism, including fat-burning in the body.

Your body utilizes 2 primary types of thyroid hormones–T3 and T4.

T4 is converted into the more usable form of T3 in order to put it to optimal use.

The thyroid gland contains the largest amount of selenium in the body. This selenium is essential for the thyroid gland to produce T3.

When your body runs low on selenium, it cannot convert T4 into T3…and this deficiency can lead to a condition called hypothyroidism or low thyroid hormone.

Hypothyroidism is characterized by weight gain, loss of energy, hair loss, puffiness, poor digestion, and sometimes anemia.

Another malfunction of the thyroid gland results from Hashimoto’s disease–an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing multiple problems, including hyperactive thyroid and hypothyroidism.

A study involving 6,000 people found low levels of selenium were associated with an increased risk of Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism.

Increasing the levels of selenium will slow down the anti-thyroid activity of the immune system and enable it function more normally.

Additionally, studies show that selenium supplementation also benefits people diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease and thyroid diseases such as Grave’s disease.

Selenium in the sperm mitochondria can affect the behavior and proper function of sperms as they swim to fertilize an ovum.

For women, it’s thought to reduce the chances of miscarriage, though the research isn’t conclusive yet.

And while low levels of selenium can cause fertility problems, too high levels of it can adversely affect fertility as well. So it’s important to ensure you get the correct dosage.

Signs of Selenium Deficiency

And foods that load plentiful amounts of selenium include Brazil nuts, halibut, yellow fine tuna, oysters, sunflower seeds, shiitake, mushrooms, chicken, eggs, sardines, grass-fed beef, turkey, and liver.

The current daily recommendation is 55 micro-grams per day for adults and children over the age of 4.

Pregnant and nursing women need about 70 micro-grams.

While selenium is an essential mineral, you only need small amounts of it. Excessive intake can be potentially very harmful.

Selenium in food comes from the soil and the real contents depend on where the food is grown.

Beware of adverse interactions with some medications and other supplements, including niacin, antacids, chemotherapy drugs, steroids, statins, and birth control pills.

But the good news is that, these interactions mostly occur with supplemental selenium, and not from food.
